I am a stonewaller and builder living in the English Lake District close to the market town of Ulverston in Cumbria.
I am able to undertake the following work to a high standard:
All aspects of stonework. Barn conversions, general building and extension construction. Hard landscaping. Floor and wall tiling. Roof construction and slating/tiling work.
A little history. I began trading in the early eighties, the first few years working as a drystone waller, initially by repairing gaps in stone walls around fields on local farms. I then progressed on to undertaking longer stretches of wall on farmsteads and in gardens for private homeowners
After a few years I became the main wall re-builder after the new gas pipeline was laid from Penrith and south to the Barrow gas terminal that cut through the Cumbrian landscape in the late eighties. My task was to take down and rebuild the poor quality walling work that the construction teams had originally put back up over the pipeline on their way through the countryside, and therefore keep the landowners happy.
The inclement weather in Cumbria forced me to learn trades that would allow some regular work indoors. Fireplace construction, feature internal stonewall structures and kitchen and bathroom tiling, once mastered, became a solid part of my workload.
I have spent many years restoring, rebuilding or converting stone barns into homes around the Furness area of Cumbria. There are are number of different stone and slate types locally and much of this is uncoursed (random sizes and shapes) which require much more attention to ensure a good looking finished wall. Blending newly introduced and reclaimed materials with original walls, roofs and floors to ensure a good match is something that I have always aimed to achieve on period properties that I have renovated.
